Dear Parents of 2nd Graders,

Welcome to Second Grade! I look forward to meeting all of you in September.  Here is the supply list for 2nd grade next year.  Please try to have all your supplies in on the first day of school but no later than the first full week.

Please keep in mind that many of these supplies, especially pencils, will need to be replenished throughout the year.  We will be having snack every day.  Your child may bring a water bottle, and one healthy, easy to open, snack with you each day. They may also keep a water bottle on their desk, as long as it has a sport/closing top.  Other styles too often spill.  When packing a snack for school, please keep it separated from lunch so that when the children unpack their school bags in the morning, it will not be confused with their lunch. This is especially important for the first few weeks. 

I hope this list helps you get a jump start on school shopping! Have a great summer and please be on the lookout for an email from me later in August!

 

Supply list 2024-2025

 

• ruler
• children's scissors
• many many #2 pencils with a personal sharpener OR mechanical pencils1 box colored pencils 
• 1 box Crayola Crayons 
• 1 large eraser
• 1 of each; red and green (if possible) folders preferably plastic (they hold up much better)
• 2 composition notebooks (wide ruled if possible)
• 2 boxes of tissues
• 2 containers of disinfectant wipes
• couple of glue sticks
• bottle glue (Elmer's preferred)
• 1 pair of headphones
• pencil box or bag
• personal hand sanitizers
• GIRLS-2 rolls of paper towels
• BOYS- 1 box of gallon and quart size ziploc style baggies
• water bottle (please see above)
• bath or beach towel for sitting outside

 

Welcome to the 2024/2025 school year! My name is Mrs. Petrin and I am looking forward to another wonderful school year. I like to think of myself as fun, enthusiastic and dedicated. I now live in Johnstown, but I grew up and went to school nearby in Gloversville. I attended SUNY Plattsburgh for my bachelor’s degree and SUNY Albany for my master’s degree. I have been teaching in one form or another since 1998. My husband and I have two FUR-kids named Georgie and Emmett. Your children with quickly learn that dogs are one of my passions! I enjoy traveling in our motorhome in the summer, spending time with friends, reading, kayaking, and all things “summer”, which is my favorite season. I can’t wait to get to know all of you!

3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
4. Raise your hand to speak.
5. Be safe, be kind, be honest.

**Points will be given for good behavior. Students will have opportunities to collect Dojo points for being caught following the rules and other exceptional behaviors.**

Reading in 2nd Grade

It’s my hope that our reading program will foster a love of reading while exposing students to various genres. You and your child will be made aware of their current reading level so they know which books are appropriate for them to read. Please know the level will change and that we assess levels 3 times a year. I look forward to exploring different genres with your child and deepening their love of reading this year!

Choosing good books at home-

I want your child to love reading and I know you do too! When reading at home, try to provide books and materials around your child’s reading level. If books are too easy they won’t challenge and/or interest them. If a book is too hard it becomes a frustration. It’s also a great idea to stop and talk about what is being read along the way!

Finally, some tips…

• Spend time each day reading with your child. While their ability to read independently will be our focus this year, they also need to hear good reading, so be sure to keep reading to them!
• Talk about the books that you read. Ask them about their favorite part, things that happened in the story, what the story reminded them of or made them think about etc.
• Check their backpack and green folder daily. Follow up with them on their day, check for any papers that need to be signed and returned, and make sure their homework gets completed daily.
• Support them with their homework, but allow them to do it as independently as possible.
